What Is a Mound?

Learn what qualifies as a Mound versus a regular snow pile.

Not all snow piles are created equal. In Mounds of Anchorage, a Mound is a large, semi-permanent snow formation created by organized city snow removal—not your average plow pile.

A Mound Typically:

  • Uses heavy equipment to build and shape
  • Receives snow delivered by dump trucks
  • Exists in a dedicated snow storage area
  • Lasts well beyond winter, often into summer

What's Just a Snow Pile?

A Snow Pile is:

  • Created by routine plowing
  • Temporary and quick to melt
  • Not actively maintained or expanded
  • Small-scale and short-lived

Uploads that don't meet mound criteria may be flagged as Snow Piles.

Rule of Thumb

If it requires city-scale effort to exist—and sticks around for months—it's a Mound.
